I was invited to preview the Old Westminster Winery Greenhouse. I am sharing my experience in this blog post.
If you’re looking for a picturesque day with great wine, delicious food, and fantastic views you’ll want to check out Old Westminster Winery.
About Old Westminster Winery
Old Westminster Winery was started in 2011 by three siblings – Drew, Lisa, and Ashli. They moved to the farm with their parents in 2001 but it wasn’t until the economic downturn in 2008 that they got the idea to start the winery. With a loan from their grandfather, they hand-planted ten thousand grapevines on their property.
In a little more than a decade, Old Westminster Winery has grown to become one of Maryland’s top wineries, producing low-intervention wines exclusively from Maryland-grown grapes. In 2023, the winery was recognized as a top winery in the U.S. by Cosmopolitan Magazine and USA Today.
Sadly, one of the siblings, Drew, is battling Leukemia. In a true show of sibling love, he’s received two marrow transplants – the first from his sister Lisa, and then the second from his other sister, Ashli. The family has bravely shared their journey with the world through frequent updates on social media.
They have become staunch advocates for the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP), a non-profit organization that’s dedicated to helping every patient find the life-saving transplant they need.
The Old Westminster Winery Greenhouse Experience
Old Westminster Winery introduced its winter greenhouses, which will be available from November to April. The greenhouses are heated, family- and pet-friendly, and perfect for groups of up to 20 people!
I brought my mom, my boyfriend, and his mom to the greenhouse experience. It happened to be uncharacteristically warm for a November day.
I love the modern aesthetic of the greenhouse. They are thoughtfully decorated and very cozy for a semi-private experience at the winery.
There is a fee to reserve the greenhouses for a 3-hour period, and you will get a dedicated server to take your food and wine orders. Our server was Kiko, and he was amazing!
Wine and More
Old Westminster Winery makes all of its wines with a low-intervention philosophy with Maryland-grown grapes. The winery offers flights, bottles, and cans of wine to explore.
We started with the 2022 Take Me Home, a cider-wine blend crafted from 85% heirloom apples and 15% Chambourcin grapes. It has aromas of fresh apple cider, allspice, baked clay, and flavors of poached pear, dried cranberry, and red currant.
We also ordered a bottle of the 2022 Albariño. It is 100% Albariño that is hand-harvested, whole berry pressed, and fermented with spontaneous yeast at cool temperatures. It has flavors of lime juice, sea spray, white peaches, and grapefruit, and notes of crushed stones, tart lime, and starfruit.
My mother-in-law is not much of a wine drinker, so she ordered one of the seasonal cocktails made from their estate brandy.
The Food
You can’t have wine without food to pair. Old Westminster Winery offers a delicious seasonal menu featuring wood-fired pizzas, cheese & charcuterie boards, salads, soups, and baked goods. We ordered the prosciutto and fig, and the sausage and onion wood-fired pizza, which was so yummy!
Conclusion
We had such a fun experience at the Old Westminster Winery Greenhouse. I visited the winery many years ago, and there have been a lot of incredible upgrades to the property. While we were there, several other groups were enjoying the greenhouses, creating an energetic environment.
The Greenhouses are perfect for a girls’ day, a day date, or even to celebrate a special occasion. I can’t wait to return!
